This (rather militant) critical attitude prevailed between 1949 and 1952 in the national public sphere. However, Jean-Paul Sartre\u2019s participation in the Congress of the Peoples for Peace in 1952 brought an unexpected turn of events. The significance of the event is illustrated by the fact that, while Alexander Fadeyev had sharply attacked him in 1948, four years later, he was able to speak at an event organised by the Soviet Union.
