Abstract:

Károly Kerényi, the world-famous ancient scholar and historian of religion left Hungary in 1943. This study is focusing on the artistic travel diaries of Kerényi written and published in German in the years of 1950 and 1960 (Unwillkürliche Kunstreisen, 1954; Tage- und Wanderbücher, 1969). The main themes are: the ancient world as the part of the cultural memory, the role of travelling, the seeking for the lost Europe, the life of Hungarian emigrants in West Europe, the emerging of the Hungarian memories, relics and vestiges, the strong connection between the language and identity.
