Abstract:

Among the various sub-disciplines of semiotics, the semiotics of space has remained rather neglected, despite the much greater attention paid to the relationship between man and space in other disciplines such as sociology, psychology, economics and geography. Similarly, semiotic syntax and, within it, the sign-formations have received very little attention in relation to their importance. This paper deals with key concepts that are widely applicable in both fields. The author draws on these concepts to define the notion of sign-space and lay the foundations for sign-space analysis. Humans construct fictitious sign-spaces in addition to real sign-spaces, and the knowledge of sign-spaces supports the formation and consolidation of sign-space as a pattern of cognition and thinking. A particularly important application of sign-space theory is the semiotic support of educational processes, since consciously constructed educational sign-spaces make teaching and learning more effective and interesting.
