Abstract:

Lake Balaton plays a prominent role in the Hungarian collective memory, and can be considered as a site of memory. Cultural products rely on representations constructed in relation to Balaton, varying, shaping and consolidating them. It is in this context that we can examine the books of Zoltán D. Zajácz’s Bloody Balaton trilogy, which were marketed by the publisher as „retro crime novels”. In what follows, we will firstly examine the geopolitical context in which the novels set the story, and then, after analysing these poetic specificities, we will look for answers regarding the tension that arises between the stories’ locations and the (publisher’s) paratexts.
