Abstract
Discourse Networks starts with an emblematic scene, faust’s attempt to translate the opening lines of the gospel of John. This scene points to the notational system of the nineteenth century, but also alludes to the previous discursive formation. This article speculates how Kittler might have imagined this time period, the republic of scholars (“gelehrtenrepublik”).
