Abstract:

Jenő Józsi Tersánszky’s 1929 novel, „A margarétás dal”, tells the story of Natasha Gajdarova, a woman of half-Russian and half-German origin. This protagonist, however, steps out of the purely militaristic colour, and is more concerned with her inner-spiritual dilemmas and delusions about love than with the fortunate or unfortunate twists and turns of the war that ravages the outside world. The paradoxes of the protagonist’s character, the worldview and narrative technique of the novel, and the aspects of the interspersed textual types demand productivity not only in terms of reception but also of interpretation. Natasha’s emotional world and the cunning practices of her narrative can only be understood if the external and internal motives behind this ‘novelistic affair of the heart’ are also explored, and the bite and silence of the sentences in the text are added to.
