Abstract:

With the help of exceptional sources, the author tries to reveal the procedures and solutions by which tailoring could be mastered and learned among guild crafts. During the Hungarian guild era, tailoring was one of the widespread trades of craft activities, and tailors’ guilds were among the most traditional and populous guilds. The study attempts to present the knowledge transfer practice of craft knowledge exclusively by analyzing the sample books of Hungarian guild tailors. It discusses and analyzes the applied information and communication procedures, with particular attention to the (sign)-theoretical reading of the interoperability of verbality and visuality.
