Abstract:

Novel-based comics own a very particular place in the medium’s history: even its name (‘képregény’ means ‘graphic novel’) comes from this tight literary bonding. As a tool of advertising and propaganda, it has reached a quite low reputation level, and since they were handled secondary, they never really had a chance to be judged on their own. In the beginning of my essay, I run through the dissimilar definitions of the medium, then I proceed with the related period of the history of Hungarian comics and how its community is organized. The interpretation itself is partly based on the relation between the three most important components: words, pictures and the reader’s participation.
