Abstract:

The essay focused on the alteration of the ethos of poverty from the late Kadar age till the post- communist era. This changing of paradigms is deeply rooted in the process of disintegration of traditional categories: tragedy and comedy. Based on László Krasznahorkai’s novel Satantango (1985) and its film adaptation directed by Béla Tarr (1994) on the one hand and Péter Rudolf ’s film comedy, Glasstiger (2001) on the other hand the goal is to compare the different kinds of representation of poverty in the last decades of Hungarian art.

Keywords: representation of poverty, deprivation, post-communist era, irony
