Abstract:

A distinctive feature of Lajos Grendel’s short stories is the experimentation with the concept of uncertain reality. This study examines the narrative techniques of presentation of the fantastic in Grendel’s short story titled Chasteful report from the middle of a dream by using the theories of Tzvetan Todorov, Ana María Barrenechea, Ľubomir Doležel and Enriqueta Morillas Ventura, which are complementary, though confronting in some issues of the nature and narratibility of the fantastic. Based on the theories of the aforementioned authors, this study offers the ’fantastic’ reading of Grendel’s short story, in which the fantastic unfolds from the tension established between unnatural, supernatural and irrealistic as well as the usual and regarded as normal events, the collision between the visible and invisible worlds and the instability of the narrator’s identity.
