Abstract:

Jameson’s whole career has been marked by his engagement with Sartre’s works, from his doctoral dissertation through the chapters on Sartre in Marxism and Form (1974) to his prefaces to the new English editions of Critique de la raison dialectique (2004, 2006) and his 2014 article in the New Left Review on the relevance of Sartre today. Sartre is also an important reference point in Jameson’s book Archeologies of the Future (2005). Sartre’s thinking clearly had a major influence on Jameson, particularly on questions of community and solidarity, as well as subjectivity, praxis, and freedom. This study reviews the main stages of Jameson’s reception of Sartre, highlighting primarily the points of connection in social philosophy that are also decisive for Jameson’s work in aesthetics and cultural theory.
