Abstract

This article argues that Kittler’s Aufschreibesysteme extrapolates a mode of critical inquiry that does not get lost in the hermeneutic mechanisms of texts, but decodes how texts “program” their readers. The suggestion is that Kittler’s reading method can be further developed into an analysis of commentaries if we understand  commentaries” as material traces that refer to historical techniques of text processing.
