Abstract

One of the central passages in friedrich Kittler’s Discourse Networks is the analysis of faust’s attempt to translate the opening lines of the gospel of John; according to Kittler, this scene represents the historical point where translation becomes hermeneutics. however, what faust showcases in this scene is the practice of translation rather than the process of interpretation—the scene focuses on the practice of writing.
