Absztrakt:Compared to his prose works published after 1920, the earlier short stories written by Hungarian author Dezső Kosztolányi have been largely ignored by literary historians. The aim of this examination is to demonstrate the wealth of knowledge to be gleaned from „abandoned” texts such as the story, God’s Judgement, originally published in Kosztolányi’s first collection of short works, Bewitched Nights (1908). Analysis of the various textual variations taken by God’s Judgement ˗ as well as comparing these to other works bearing thematic and topical similarities ˗ will allow us to trace the routes and stages taken by texts in the evolution of Kosztolányi’s oeuvre, while also casting light on how this creative process resulted in the compact and powerful language typical of Kosztolányi’s works from the 20’s and 30’s.
