Abstract:

Born in 1904, the Hungarian translator László (Ladislav) Gara lived in Paris from 1924 until his death in 1966. Apart from translating important Hungarian works into French, he also persuaded famous French writers, poets to translate Hungarian literature into French. Focusing on Gara’s carrier between the two world wars, the paper investigates how translation and the political and cultural events influenced the French reception of Ferenc Molnár, Mihály Babits and Zsigmond Móricz.
