Abstract:

The contribution speculates about the existence of a central European canon of authors or works. Based on the slovak reception of Péter Esterházy, it examines the characteristics of canonization in the receiving culture and the role of the artistic translation. central Europeanness is here not understood only as a discursive term organizing/framing/shaping the author’s texts, but one that functions also as a figure of reading. The study maps the slovak reception of Péter Esterházy from 2005, when the first translation of his work was published (the
novel harmonia cælestis) to his last dramatic work, the play Mercedes Benz written for the slovak National Theatre.
