Abstract:

The use of the art historical term of intermedia was closely connected with the wider use of mediums in fine art in the 1960s, with the expansion of medial boundaries. This often involved examining the appropriateness and functioning of the mediums. In my thesis, I examine the interweaving of art historical and semiotic methodology, the change in the use of sign types in visual arts, in order to outline the conceptual borders of intermediality. I find that semiotics is suitable for the division of signs in the direction of icon-index-symbol, the transition and change between sign
types (de- or reiconicization) and the interpretation of the phenomena of art history.
